Hear through the skin — ultrasonic audio transmission via the nervous system

The most refined version of a 1958 invention by 14-year-old prodigy Dr. Patrick Flanagan. Two US patents. Vindicated by mainstream science 33 years later. The NF3 encodes audio into ultrasonic frequency and transmits it through the body's tissues to the brain.

The Neurophone discovered an additional sense — one every person has, but few have used. The ability to hear through the skin.

Sound is encoded into ultrasonic frequency, transmitted through the body's tissues, and reconstructed in the brain. The NF3 is the most refined version of the original 1958 design — built with modern signal processing while preserving Dr. Flanagan's original intent.

The Inventor

Invented at fourteen

A child prodigy in electronics, chemistry, and physics. Two US patents. Vindicated by mainstream science 33 years later.

Young Patrick Flanagan

Dr. Patrick Flanagan built the first Neurophone in 1958, at the age of fourteen. The invention encoded sound into ultrasonic signals and transmitted it through the skin, where it was reconstructed in the brain — a method of hearing that did not exist in any scientific literature at the time.

His invention received two United States patents:

US 3,393,279US 3,647,970

In 1991, Martin Lenhardt of the University of Virginia, working independently, confirmed Dr. Flanagan's discovery. His findings were published in Science magazine (Vol. 253, 1991). Mainstream research had finally caught up to a 14-year-old inventor's work from three decades earlier.

The Mechanism

How the Neurophone works

Lenhardt's 1991 paper identified the receiver — and confirmed the device had been doing exactly what Flanagan claimed.

Lenhardt discovered that humans can detect ultrasonic sound when it is transmitted through the skin, bones, and liquids of the body. The receiver is a pea-sized organ in the inner ear called the saccule — normally associated with balance, but also containing nerve endings that reach throughout the brain.

Some of those nerves go to the regions that process sound. Others reach the areas concerned with long-term memory. When the Neurophone transmits at 40 kHz, it activates these pathways — the same pathways humans use when swimming alongside dolphins and whales, who emit ultrasonic frequencies as part of their natural communication.

The NF3 contains a digital signal processor that encodes audio input and modulates it into ultrasonic signals appropriate for skin transmission. Two transducers, placed against the skin, deliver the signal. The brain reconstructs it as sound — heard not through the ears, but through the body.

In Practice

What people use it for

The Neurophone is used for meditation, learning, and the exploration of an unusual perceptual channel.

Meditation & Relaxation

Users report the Neurophone as a deepening element in their meditation practice — a way to engage the nervous system through a channel separate from external sound.

Focused Learning

The original recordings included programs designed for the absorption and recall of new material. The transmission method bypasses the standard auditory pathway.

Whole-Brain Coherence

Dr. Flanagan described the Neurophone's effect as balancing between the left and right hemispheres of the brain — an experience users continue to describe.

Music & Audio Exploration

Any audio source can be connected. The NF3 allows you to listen to music ultrasonically — an experience that cannot be replicated through conventional headphones.

Important Notes

Power. The NF3 runs on a 9-volt battery, not included. A rechargeable battery is recommended.

Sensitivity. If you are sensitive to ultrasonic waves in any way, please discontinue use immediately.

Guarantee. The NF3 is guaranteed for parts and labor against manufacturing defects for 90 days from delivery. PhiSciences is not responsible for damage from dropping or improper use.

Returns. The NF3 cannot be returned. However, given the device's popularity and scarcity, owners typically find them easy to resell on the secondary market.

The Neurophone is not a medical device. The NF3's use is strictly to enhance meditation, increase learning, and to listen to music ultrasonically. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
